Van Dyck spent working for Charles I "are the most dramatic in the history of English painting" and he assembled a dazzling exhibition to prove his point and to inaugurate the National Portrait Gallery's exhibition rooms. Also laid in article on "Medici and Stuart: a Grand Ducal Gift of 'Giovanni Bologna' Bronzes for Henry Prince of Wales (1612) from Burlington Magazine August 1973 by Katharine Watson and Charles Avery, with a note from Katherine to Charles enclosing the article. Also enclosed is a brochure about Paul Elben whose Danish parents emigrated to the U.S. where he was born in St. Louis and grew up in Kansas City where he graduated with a BFA from the University of Kansas where he went on to have a career as a commercial artist and as a teacher in Switzerland. Van Dyck was steeped in the European tradition, above all the work of Titian and Veronese and set the art of portraiture on an entirely new course and a profound influence on Gainsborough. It is a shock to realize he died at 42. His spirit lay in poesie.
