"Dr. Robert P. T. Coffin in a commencement addres June 1937 said in part 'Sarah Orne Jewett, the first of our Maine writers to realize what a state of grace Maine is, called our land the country of the pointed firs." Prefatory page by Charles Miner Thompson called Orne's art "the fragrant, retiring, exquisite flower" which she would call the symbol of New England virtue.
