During his 16 yrs in the area, he lived in. several homes in Lawrence, Methuen, Salem, NH & Salem, NH, and was employed as a teacher, farmer, shoe worker, and textile laborer. He was married in the Central Building in downtown Lawrence, to a girl he met at Lawrence High School, where he was valedictorian for the class of 1892. He wrote his first poem while he attended Lawrence High. Neff followed in Frost's early footsteps. She talked to scores of people and found themes in the poet's work that reflect his local upbringing.
