Ericsson was born in Sweden in 1803 & was a leader in the development of. steam locomotion by land & sea. His career began under patronage of builder of the gota Canal from Stockholm to Gothenburg in Sweden. In England at 26 he constructed a locomotive which attained a speed of 28 miles per hour. He also designed the screw propeller, then came to America in 1839 & began to introduce his propeller on canals & inland waters of U.S. In 1841 he began construction of the first screw-driven ship of war, the Princeton, a frigate of 600 tons, in which for the first time the means of propulsion, the screw & the engines were placed below the water safe from shot. Other mechanical devices he developed were air compressors, a boiler with artificial draft, a steam fire engine, the caloric engine & innumerable instruments of war & commerce. His swift construction of the Monitor was just in time to save the Union fleet from the iron-clad Merrimac. From the Monitor came the modern dreadnaught. Navy blue binding, gilt lettering.
