Brion enlisted as a recruit in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, forerunner of WACs, from her small town of Friendship, NY. at the beginning of WWII. She traveled to Fort Devens, MA, where she learned how to be a soldier, and then to Camp carson outside Colorado Springs, where she learned how to be a dental technician. Ultimately she was trained as a cryptanalyst and was moved to the Phillippines. There she and her fellow workers discovered that their laundry was being wrapped in pages from an important Japanese code book.
