Author: Alice Hepplewhite, illustrated by Thomas Hepplewhite: Title: The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide; or Repository of Designs for every article of Household Furniture, in the Newest and Most Approved Taste: Displaying a Great Variety of Patterns.
Description: [London, I. and J. Taylor, 1794]. The Third edition (hardback). Folio (37cm by 25cm), 24pp. 126 plates, numbered 1-9, 9*, 10-39, 40*, 41-78, 78*, 79-123. Recently rebound in half brown calf, brown cloth boards, red title labels to the front board and the spine. This is a defective copy of the 1794 Third Edition of this important book. There are several significant condition problems - firstly, all leaves prior to page 1 (including the title page) are missing, and the final plate (the folding plate numbered 124/125) is also missing. Secondly, the corners of the text pages are dog-eared, with some loss to many pages (this problem is worse at the front of the book than it is at the back). On the plus side, there is no loss to any of the text or images. Thirdly, there is staining of the contents (this staining is at its worst for the text pages and the first 20 plates). On the plus side, the recent binding has been executed attractively. Not a thing of beauty, but this is an opportunity to obtain an original 18th-century edition of this important book at a fraction of the price of a copy in better condition.
