Author: Roland Freart & John Evelyn: Title: A Parallel of the Antient Architecture with the Modern, in a collection of ten principal authors who have written upon the Five Orders [bound with] An Account of Architects and Architecture.
Description: London: printed for D Brown, J Walthoe & D Midwinter, 1707. The second edition in English (hardback). Folio (35cm by 23cm), title, 17pp dedicatory & epistle, 115pp; title, dedication leaf, 2pp preface, 75pp, 1pp adverts. The main work contains 39 full-page engravings and several smaller illustrations; the second work contains two text engravings. 19th-century binding of half brown calf, marbled boards. This copy lacks the frontispiece and the extra-title; the binding is rubbed and scuffed (but intact), and there is some ink annotation in copper-plate handwriting to the handful of the text pages and illustrations. Nonetheless, the contents are tightly bound and generally clean, and this copy is in good condition overall. The main work was written by Freart, with additions by Evelyn; the second work has a separate title page (dated 1706), and was written by John Evelyn, together with Leon Baptist Alberti of Statues. Evelyn is better-known for his diaries and his publications on horticulture; this was his main work on the subject of architecture.
