Author: Nicolas , Sir Nicholas Harris: Title: History of the most honourable Order of the Bath.
Description: [1840]. 4to, 276pp, ciii (appendix). Frontispiece and text illustrations. The binding is worn (backstrip and boards detached), but the text block is tight, and this would be suitable for rebinding. There are a large number of neat annotations in the margins, most of which are revisions or corrections (possibly by the author, or possibly by Chas Geo Young, the original owner of this copy). This is an unusual book, and I have not been able to research it fully. There is a half-title page, but no title (and no evidence that a title page was ever bound in). The backstrip has the title "Nicolas's Order of the Bath", but there is no copy of this work in the British Library Public Catalogue. The book can be dated accurately to 1840, as the history itself runs up to 1840, and the inscription "Chas Geo Young, York Herald 1 Sep 1840" appears at the front of the book. Nicolas went on to write the 4-volume "History of the orders of Knighthood of the British Empire", published in 1841-42, but this seems to be a separate title. This is a thorough and detailed work, and, with the annotations, this may be a unique copy.
