Title: My Voice Saved Me
Description: Centauro Editrice, Milan. 1961, First Edition. Softcover, with dust jacket. 152 pages (complete). First edition of English translation. A much owned, but still calm copy. Jani's story is of huge importance for two reasons. Firstly, his story is unusual as he was used as a 'music slave' by the SS. He was commanded to sing (he had a noted tenor voice) at whim and without notice. This saved him from the ovens. Secondly, Emilio Jani was one of the first of the Italian Jews to write about his experiences in Fascist Italy and of the Holocaust. Before him the Italian collaboration and role in the Shoah was being brushed away from the National consciousness. The covers of this copy are much worn and creased from handling and use. They are secure and comfortable. Within, the contents have evidence of avid, contented use throughout. The pages have handling marks and some reader-wear. However, they are also comfortable, courageous, clear, certain and often unbearably moving. A necessary book. fk. Fair/No Jacket.
