Title: Vue de Sacramento. [ca.1850].
Description: Paris, France. This hand-colored lithograph was made by Auguste Bry and published by E. Savary in ca. 1850, after Mr. Breton’s original watercolor of ca. 1847/8. Louis Le Breton (1818-1866) was a surgeon in the French Navy from 1836-1848. During that period, he went on several long expeditions and made drawings and watercolors of noteworthy places, including Sacramento, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Boston. "Vue de Sacramento" is printed in the center of the lower margin. The lithographed image measures 24 x 36 cm. The matting and frame measure 20 1/2" x 23 1/2". The point-of-view is from the west side of the Sacramento River looking up J Street, with a watering hole in the center. Several important building names are recognizable in the image; from left to right, City Hotel, Eagle Theatre, Eldorado Exchange, Halley’s Groceries and Prescriptions, The House, Fremont House, Gen Jackson’s Hotel, Drugs, J. R. Starr & Co. The lithograph is simply and elegantly framed in black wood and it was handled by Ravens Corner in Sacramento; Ravens is well-known for its exquisite work and has done framing for the Crocker Art Museum. The glass is Museum Glass by Tru Vue. The lithograph was purchased from Charles Gray Fine Arts (at the time in Sacramento) some 20 plus years ago. By the way, this view of Sacramento is same view my paternal great grandfather, John Bradford Cave, would have seen when he first arrived in the soon-to-be-city in 1849, then permanently in 1852. There is a little browning in the lower margin, otherwise the lithograph is quite handsome. Shipping at cost.
