Author: CHARLES F. ORVIS & A. NELSON CHENEY. Title: Fishing with the Fly. Sketches by Lovers of the Art, with Illustrations of Standard Flies. Collected by Charles F. Orvis & A. Nelson Cheney.
Description: Troy, New York. H. B. Nims & Company. 1885 [1883]. Second Edition [in reality, this edition, with a different publisher, should be called a First Edition Thus, but I will dispense with bibliographical accuracy and call it what it has been called in the trade for a century - a second edition]. Octavo (7 1/2 x 6). [viii], 1-325 [326-332] pp. Fifteen color plates of flies as called for - attractive flies for trout, salmon, bass, and sea trout. With contributions from many notable writers of the time, including Charles Hallock, George Dawson, Fred Mather, Seth Green, R. B. Roosevelt, and of course, A. Nelson Cheney and Charles F. Orvis. The book has been touted as one fly fishing’s greatest promotional pieces of its time; an early example as to why the Orvis brand remains so prominent today. The book is bound in its original green decorated cloth with gilt and black titles on the spine and front cover. Top edge gilt. Floral patterned end papers. A nice clean, bright book. There’s minor separation at the inner margin on page 26, and minor wear at the spine ends, otherwise a bright, very good book.
