Description: London, Abelard-Schuman. 1962, First British Edition. Hard Cover with dust jacket. Ill.: Ake Runnstrom. 92 pp, 8" H. "(T)he peace (of Little Chipping) was shattered when Mr. Progress of the Progress Company burst upon (the villagers) with devilish all-purpose machines that baked, built, and even taught, quicker and better. The villagers felt they might just as well not be there, and thought they would never free themselves of the tyranny of the machines. Then it began to rain, and it rained until the river flooded the streets and the lower floors of the houses - Everything was topsy-turvy, and Spillman, Mr. Pomander's old octopus friend, was a great help; his eight arms could pick apples under water or fish children from the floods. Nobody really minded the flood for it did ruin the machines, and did rid the town of Mr. Progress forever."
