Description: Macmillan, London, 1977, first edition.. Unpaginated, oblong (5 1/2" H x 7 1/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333220781 A picture book without text, by the artist known for his charming illustrations of some of Miss Read's novels of English village life. In this book, his marvelously detailed colour illustrations take us through an Edwardian Christmas, from the arrival by steam train of visitors to an English country house, through decorating the house and church and all the other preparations, to the excitement of opening stockings on Christmas morning, Christmas dinner, games, the hunt meet, skating and visiting. Next come the preparations for a costume ball (and the servants' celebrations 'below stairs'), followed by sledding, sales, theatre and home entertainments before the house party breaks up and we watch the train hurry away across a snowy countryside. Tiny scuff on front panel. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, very light edge browning. Very Good/Very Good.
