Description: Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1989.. 276 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 1550020641 B&w and colour plates, maps. "Elizabeth Poshuma Simcoe was a remarkable woman. Raised in a wealthy and genteel English family, as a young wife, she accompanied her husband, the career soldier John Graves Simcoe, on his posting as the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada - then a sparsely populated backwoods outpost of the empire. She embraced with enthusiasm this chance for adventure and her diaries and her plentiful sketches reflect thi s joy of discovery in this 'new land'. The Simcoes returned to England in 1796 to await further imperial postings. John Graves Simcoe died in 1806 and his widow lived on to 1850 as a wealthy English countrywoman. While her popular Canadi a n d i a r i e s remain a valuable source for this intriguing biography, other materials exist that have rarely been looked at over the decades. Of considerable interest are the hundreds of letters Elizabeth's best friend, Mary Anne Bruges, sent to C a na da , an d hu ndreds of Elizabeth's own letters have survived, as well as those of her daughters and sons. From these neglected sources emerges the story of an energetic, involved woman. Her life divides into two phases. As the wife of Joh n G ra ves Si mc oe, E liz abeth is a sensible lady of the Age of Reason, pursuing the picturesque with sketch book and water colours. Following Simcoe's death, her long life as a widow finds meaning in fostering the well-being of her church.
