Description: Paris: J.G. Dentu, 1812.. First edition. In 4 volumes. Very good in later cloth with gilt-lettered, leather spine labels. Original plain blue wrappers bound-in each volume. Ex Franciscan Library, Québec with their perf stamp on each front wrapper and title; ink stamp on each title; shelf label and small bookbinder's label on front endpapers of each volume. Shelf label has been removed from the lower spine of each volume with resulting lightened patch. Volumes II, III, and IV are unopened. 518; 692; 65 6 ; 6 6 0 p p . J e a n - B a ptiste-Francois Léveillé (1769-1829) studied surgery in Paris under Desault. He served with Napoleon's army in Italy as chirurgien de première classe. His courage in treating the wounded in forward positions lead to hi s b ei ng p la ce d i n c ha rg e of t he military hospital at Pavia where he became a friend of Scarpa. After leaving the army, Léveillé returned to Paris where he became physician to the prisons and at the Hôtel-Dieu a nd was a founding me mbe r of th e A cad émi e d e Méd ec ine . I n a dd iti on to h is translations of Scarpa, Léveillé wrote a number of works on surgery of which this work is his most important.
