In the English translation, the books of the original work are denoted "chapters." The translator’s "work, it appears, is done from the French, and shows subtractions, and what is worse, additions."--Carlyle, Crit. and miscell. essays, New York, 1872, vol. I, p. 178. An American edition, with imprint: New York, Collins and Hannay .. and Collins and co. appeared in the same year, and was reissued in 1844 by Collins & Hannay. cf. Baldensperger, Goethe en France, 1907, no. 1696. "Postscript" (summary of Goethe’s works) and "Biographical notices of the principal persons mentioned in these memoirs" (vol. II, p. [161]-174, [175]-350) by the (original?) translator.
