[xliv] , 351 pp. With engraved titlepage; 6 double-page plates; 2 folding maps, and 1 double-page map; and 7 half-page views of Leiden, 2 half-page plates of nobles, 52 full-page portraits in the text. Parchment. (spine ends damaged; small piece of tape on one page; 2 tiny marginal holes in one plate.) ¶ The maps depicti the city of Leiden (by J. Prs. Dou) ; the Siege of Leiden (1574); and the Relief of Leiden; the plates in the text are mostly portraits of notable Leiden professors and scholars.The engravings include a drawing of the anatomical theater, the Leiden university library, the Hortus and other Leiden landmarks. ¶ The biographies of the scholars (page 81-345) are mostly written by themselves, including Hugo Grotius. (Ter Meulen / Diermanse 711.5). ; Smitskamp 105 ; Rahir 200; Willems 237. ¶ The description of Leiden is for the most part based on Orlers' Beschrijvinge der stad Leyden (1614). [most illustrations of Leiden are after Orlers as well]. This is an augmented edition of the work originally published as 'Illustris Academia Lugd-Batava' in 1613. ¶ Copy of WILLEM VAN DER GOES (1613-1688). With his owner's entry in top margin of the title-page (slightly chafed); and a few remarks - most probably in his hand - on the last blank. Willem van der Goes entered the university of Leiden in 1631; and read law. In 1653 he accidentally killed an opponent of his brother, and was banished from Holland. Van der Goes settled in Vienna, and was considered an 'unofficial liaison' between Holland and the Habsburg court. Finally in 1673 the ban was lifted and Van der Goes returned to The Hague.
