Title: Het Schilder-Boeck waer in voor eerst de leerlustighe iueght den grondt der edel vry schilderconst in verscheyden deelen wort voorghedraghen.
Description: Haarlem, Paschier van Wesbusch, 1604. 4to (in 8). (ca.20x14, 4 cm.) [xvi], 304, (1 errata) leaves. With engraved title (Jacob Matham after Karel van Mander). (Typographical titles to 2-4 part: Alkmaar, Jacob de Meester for Passchier van West-busch, 1603, resp. 1604). 18th-century full calf. (lacking the portrait; handwritten name on title, dated 1640, removed with slight damage; small burn hole in lower margin 1 leaf; marginal water stain on last 60 leaves; the dedications in part 2 and 3 (to Jacques Razer and Bartholomeus Ferreris) are cancels; otherwise a reasonably fine copy). ¶ Laudatory poems by P.Scriverius, A.V.M., P.Bor, Peterus van Veen, Z.Heyns, Israël Jacobsz, I.Detringh, I.Targier, Th.Schrevelius, S.van Delmanhorst, I.Duym, I.V.Mosscher, Celosse, P.D.Ketelaer, P.C.Ketel, and others. ¶ The rare first edition of this famous work. It covers an elaborate theory of art, the technique of painting, and the biographies of painters from classical antiquity to modern times. The general title calls for a last part "d'Uytlegginghe op den Metamorphoseon Pub.Ovidii Nasonis", which is not present in our copy and never has been. In fact, the publisher sold two variants: one with, and one without this commentary on Ovid. One of the other two extant copies without the Ovid was owned by Peter Paul Rubens. (Werner Waterschoot, Quaerendo 1983, p. 273).
