Description: Delft, Andries Voorstad, for Jan ten Hoorn, Amsterdam, 1697. Folio. (32, 5x19cm.). [xvi], 364, [8] pp., incl.engraved title-page. With 22 plates, of which 13 are double-page plates. Contemporary laced vellum. (engraved title-page repaired; first three text leaves repaired in upper margin; some minor repairs to the plates; some plates reinforced in the hinges; last two leaves repaired in bottom margin; bound slightly tightly . A good copy. ¶ The monumental 17th century work on Dutch shipbuilding, born from daily work on the shipyard. Van Yk dedicates this work to the Administrators of the Delft Chamber of the East India Company (VOC). In the introduction Cornelis van Yk stresses that he is from a shipbuilders family, that his grandfather, his father and his uncles were all shipbuilders, and that he himself took up the trade at the age of twelve, and that all his writing comes from the experience of many years. ¶ Hoogendoorn YK01; Sloos-09036. Landwehr, VOC, 1109: "Issues are known with canceled folios **1-2." This is a copy with these cancels, where Van Yk adds a list of foreign books on shipbuilding to his citation of Witsens handbook.
