Description: Leipsic et Vienne, Jean Paul Kraus, 1771. [xvi], 520, [32] pp. With 32 facsimilé plates, numbered 1a, 1b, 2-24, 25b, 25a, 26a, 26b, 27a, 27b, 28; of which 28 folding. Nineteenth century half-leather with raised bands. (small hole in titlepage; paper browned and foxed throughout; two tiny burn holes; small marginal tear in one leaf; covers rubbed; hinge weak); a few bookseller's entries tipped in) Provenance: bookplate of Gideon Townsend Stanton (1885 - 1964). ¶ Carl Heinrich von Heine(c)ken (1707 - 1791) was librarian, diplomat and director of the Dresden Kupferstichkabinett. Heineken takes this Dresden collection as an ideal model for future collectors. Most facsimile plates are of early block books. These early xylographed books are discussed at length (p.292-482). ¶ "Wird selten. Heinecken hat durch dieses heute noch unentberhliches Werk Vieles zuerst angeregt. Seine Beschreibungen sind sehr genau; nicht immer seine Facsimile's. Seine hier dargelegte Idee liegt bei dem Kön.Kupferstichcabinet in Dresden zum Grunde."(Ebert 9372).
