Title: A relation in form of journal, of the voiage and residence which the most excellent and most mighty prince Charls the II king of Great Britain, &c. hath made in Holland, from the 25 of May, to the 2 of June, 1660. Rendered into English out of the original French, by Sir William Lower, knight.
Description: The Hague, Adrian Vlack, 1660. Folio. [iv], 116 pp. With a folding portrait of Charles II and 6 (5 double-page, and 1 large folding) plates after A. van der Venne and J. Toorenvliet by D. Philippe and T. Matham. Later half roan with morocco title-shield. (mediocre, used copy: hinges slightly chafed; short contemporary biographical note on Wiliam Lower written on title-page; name cut from upper corner title-page; a bit (at times heavily) water stained; all plates with repairs [ie along the folding lines]; and most (including the frontispiece portrait) are cut out and mounted in later, sturdier paper borders; a few contemporary marginalia with biographical information on the persons portrayed/mentioned) - the 36-page long Anglia Triumphans, often added, is lacking here. ¶ VERY RARE ENGLISH EDITION of this work, which appeared at the same time in French and Dutch, of the mostly first-hand accounts of the exile of Charles II in Holland, and his departure as King of England from Scheveningen. The impressive large plates depict i.a. his arrival at Delft, The Hague, a candle-light banquet at the Mauritshuis (the later king William III is depicted here as well) and his departure from Scheveningen. ¶ Landwehr, Splendid ceremonies 126; Muller, Historieplaten 2156; Davenport193 ff. Only one copy in the Netherlands (KB).
