In his dedicatory preface to the magistrates of this home town of Gouda he praises their moderation. In protest of the intolerance of the Dutch calvinist religion, he converted to Catholicism later in life. His emblems and comments accentuate the importance of tolerance and humanism. Laudatory poem by Gerard Traudenius, rector of the Latin School in Gouda. Landwehr, Emblem and Fable Books, 727. The attributon of the emblems to Crispijn de Passe the Younger is now questioned.
