Het heeft ons niets dan armoede en ellende gebracht. Zoveel mogelijk nemen en zo min mogelijk geven, dat is steeds haar richtlijn geweest. [....]. [Nu is het] zo, dat de feitelijke machthebbers in de Nederlandse koloniën de Engelse regering is. De laatste zal, daarbij ten volle ondersteund door de onwettige Nederlandse regering, ongetwijfeld niets nalaten om de Indonesische bevolking voor haar oorlogsdoeleinden te gebruiken en elk rechtmatig verlangen naar vrijheid en zelfstandigheid van het Indonesische volk zal zij onbarmhartig in de kiem smoren, gelijk zij het doet in India." ¶ Volgt: een beschrijving van de toestand in Indonesië: het lage levenspeil, hongersnoden, de nationale beweging, moderne Indonesische literatuur. ¶ Perhimpunan Indonesia, an Indonesian students’ organization in the Netherlands, was the first political organization to use the term Indonesia in its name. It was an anti-colonial, nationalist organization, with a strong anti-capitalist streak, influenced by socialist ideas and by Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi’s principle of nonviolent civil disobedience. In the commentary on the new situation, two months after the German occupation of Holland, Setyadit stresses that the Indonesian struggle against colonialism is a struggle against Dutch and British forces. ¶ Raden Mas Setyadjit Soegondo was the main organizer in the Indonesian student organization Perhimpunan Indonesia. He later took an active part in the Dutch resistance, i.a. in November 1940 in a strike against the Germans in protest against the banning of jews from the Delft Technical University. After the war he was member of the Indonesian government, but the Indonesian army executed him during a communist uprising in 1948.
