Description: La Haye, Matthieu Roguet, 1727. in-12. 2 vol. in 1. [xvi], 515, [13].[vi], 580, [15] pp. Parchment. (binding a bit used; stamp of the Fürstlich-Starhemberrgische Familienbibliothek Schloss Eferding on first endpaper, stamp on title 'Aus Schloss Haus 1893' and armorial bookplate. Upper pastedown and first two blanks damaged; (for the largest part very small) wormholes in the binding, titlepage and in bottom margin of first 20 pp.) ¶ Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738), from a French huguenot family, was professor in the city of Deventer. He is the author of the imaginary travels "Voyages et avantures de Jacques Massé" (1710) and "Les avantures & le voyage de Groenland du réverend père cordleier Pierre de Mésange" (1720). In 1727, upon publication of the "Lettres choisies" the Deventer church council accused Tyssot of spinozism and atheism, and urged the authorities to dismiss him which they promptly did. See: Thijssen-Schoute, Nederlands Cartesianisme, p.635-642; Jonathan Israel, Radical Enlightenment, p.594-595 ("The predictable outcry was immediate.") and Rosenberg, Tyssot de Patot and his work, p.29-36. Tyssot had dedicated the second volume to the young prince, later Stadtholder William IV, without prior permission. This offended the court. The coarse contents of the book deemed unsuitable for a young prince. Moreover Tyssot's own wife was repulsed by a bawdy poem in which he describes her sexual demands. This poem is removed from the copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale (present here). Rare, only three copies in Dutch public libraries.
