Description: Antwerpen, Willem Vorsterman, 1542. 8vo. (15, 1x9, 8 cm). (244 leaves). Title-page printed in black and red with wood-engraved borders. Woodcut initials. Contemporary calf over wooden boards, with brass catches (clasps gone). (Binding rubbed, spine ends slightly chipped; bottom pastedown waterstained; a few small stains in bottom margin; last 10 leaves slightly damaged in margin; good copy.) ¶ With a few contemporary notes at the end of the book by:"suster anna ians doechter", and a biographical note on her sister's death. We have not been able to identify this Anna. It might have been Sister Anna Jansdr., (d. 1590) franciscan nun in Rodenburg (Zoeterwoude). Her sister Grietje might have been Margriet Jansdr., also a nun - in the Mariënpoel monastery (Oegstgeest). She died in 1578 [?]. ¶ Not written by Nicolas van Essche or Dirk Loer, who were merely the editors. It is still not clear who exactly authored this highly popular devotional text. This edition however, is the first where authorship is attributed to a woman. The preface of Nicolaus van Essche attributes the Peerle to an unnamed 'religieuse' who died on 28 January 1540 at the age of 77. Paul Begheyn argues this 'virtuous virgin' may have been Reinalda van Eymeren, great-aunt of Petrus Canisius (and sister in the convent of St. Agnes). (Ons Geestelijk Erf 63 (1989) pp. 170-190). ¶ Bibl.Typographia I, 4636. ¶ Ampe, Den Tempel onser Sielen, p.26-27.
