Title: Clarorum belgarum ad Ant. Magliabechium nonnullosque alios Epistolae ex autographis in Biblioth. Magliabechiana, quae nunc publica Florentinorum est, adservatis descriptae.
Description: Florence, 1745. 8vo. 2 parts in 1 volume. lvi, 384-lvi[=liv], 424 pp. With indices. Laced vellum binding, spine with title-shield. (label on pastedown; small MS note on title: Ludovicus Bernhardus [L.B.a. Zech]; very light foxing on upper margin on some leaves) ¶ Ludovicus Bernhardus might be Ludwig Bernhard von Zech (c. 1720-1779), sachsen-weissenfelsischer Geheimrat. His library was brought to auction in 1780. (/ Ludwig Bernhard von Zech wurde fürstliche Weißenfelsischer geheimer Rat und Consistorial-Direktor). ¶ Collection of letters (mostly) addressed to the learned bibliophile Antonio Magliabechi (1633-1714), librarian of the Palatine Library. As the title indicates, Magliabechi bequeathed his book collection to Grand Duke Cosimo III, for the establishment of a public library. In 1747 this Bibliotheca Magliabechiana opened; a hundred years later the Palatine library and the Bibliotheca Magliabechiana were merged, forming the core of the Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze. In the Clarorum Belgarum, letters of luminaries from the Low Countries are selected and edited by Targioni-Tozetti. The letters discuss books, ideas, people and current events: they touch on various subjects such as the lending, gifting and reviewing of books, (the behaviour of) colleague scholars and exchange news on e.g. contemporary natural phenomena.¶ With letters from: Henrik Brenkman; Pieter Burman (1668-1741); Abraham and Daniel Cossonius; Gijsbert Cuper; Johann von Diepenbrock; Petrus Francius; Willem Goes; Joannes Georgius Graevius (1632-1703); Jacobus and Laurentius Theodorus Gronovius; Nicolaas Heinsius (c.1656-1718); Eduard Holthen; Petrus Hotton; Joannes Kool; Antoni van Leeuwenhoek; Jacobus Perizonius; Adriaan Reland; Philipp Rulaeus; Conrad Ruysch.
