With large woodcut on titlepage and at the end a page-size woodcut (printer's mark) of elephant and castle (with arms of Charles V and the city of Leiden) at the end. Met grote houtsnede op de titelpagina, en paginagrote houtsnede op laatste blad:drukkersmerk, olifant met toren. Nieuw halfleer, nieuwe schutbladen. (eerste twee bladen gerepareerd in binnenmarge, latere bladnummering in bovenhoek). Dutch adaptation of Eyke von Repgow's famous 'Sachsenspiegel', a most important mediaeval German legal text. From the 'introduction' (v° of ti.) we learn that the text was translated by a jurist, master Epke: "Den Spiegel van sassen is overgheset en[de] ghetranslateert wten latijn in duytsche by eenen doctoer inden rechten gheheeten meester Epke". Nijhoff & Kronenberg 1934 mentions 2 copies: 1 owned by the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (Leiden) and a second copy in the hands of P. Hiërta, Främmestad. This is that second copy w. a bibliographic reference written on the first free endpaper, signed by P. Hiërta and dated 1906. - Breugelmans, Leiden Imprints 1483-1600, p. 41. ONLY TWO COPIES KNOWN. (one in University Library Leiden, and ours). Nijhoff/Kronenberg 1934. Dutch adaptation of Eike von Repgau's Sachsenspiegel. The woodcut on the title-page, depicting the emperor in the midst of his counsel, was formerly attributed to Lucas van Leyden. This woodcut is also known with two extensions, left and right, showing petitioners.
