(ties & first blank missing; some light gnawing at upper edge of back cover) ¶ Provenance: Armorial bookplates of A.G. du Plessis, P. de la Morandière & Lucien d'Ursin. Old bibliographical note on title-page. EDITIO PRINCEPS of this Byzantine romance. Complete with the often missing preliminaries and notes. There are copies with date 1617, and with date 1618. Gaulmin dedicated this edition to Nicolas de Verdun, president of the parlement in Paris and well versed in greek and latin. Gilbert Gaulmin (1585-1665), libertine, scholar, magistrate, eccentric and polyglot. "Il possédait toutes les langues que la confusion de la tour de Babel a introduites sur la terre; mais il excellait particulièrement dans la connaissance de la grecque, de l'hébraique, de l'arabe, de la turque, et de la persane."(Costar). Gaulmin edited at an early age Michael Psellus and Prodromus as well.; and owned a famous library of oriental books. ¶ Hoffmann II/115.
