Title: Cum erudito Laevini Torrentii Commentario, nunc primum in lucem edito. Item Petri Nannii Alcmariani in Artem poëticam.
Description: Antwerp, ex Officina Plantiniana, Johannes Moretus, 1608. 4to. (25, 3x17, 4cm). [xx], 839, [46] [2 blank] pp. With printer's device on title-page and last page, and portraits of Torrentius and Horatius. Laced vellum with turned edges. (two small burn holes; ties gone). Early prize binding, with the arms of Amsterdam on both sides in triple fillets, two gold and one blind. (Printed prize tipped in, dated 1647, and signed by the rector, Cornelius Sladus; name of beneficiary erased). ¶ "Elegantly printed by Plantin: with a prettily engraved portrait [by Corn.Galle I after Gijsbert van Veen] of Torrentius who was Bishop of Antwerp. ... It seems that Torrentius had access to many MSS.at Rome, among the most valuable of which was the Codex Laurentianus; but as Torrentius did not live to give the finishing corrections to his edition, the readings of these MSS. are not embodied in the volume. [..] to the "Ars Poetica" the commentary of Nannius is subjoined." (Dibdin II/97). "Er (Torrentius) besserte auch den Text nach Conjecturen. Sein Commentar zeichnet sich durch Kenntniss der Grammatik u.des alten Rechts aus, allein ihm mangelt Gefühl für Dichter-Schönheit u.zuwl.e.gesundes Urtheil." (Schweiger II/401). ¶ Laevinus Torrentius (Lieven van der Beken, 1525-1595), bishop of Antwerp and neo-latin poet. notorious for his panegyric of Balthasar Gerards, the assassin of William the Silent. ¶ Petrus Nannius (1500-1557), was rector of the Latin School in Gouda, and Alkmaar and in 1539 professor in Leuven, "aan het Collegium Buslidianum, zijn ambt aanvaardende met eene oratie over de Ars poetica van Horatius" (NNBW.I/1358). Laudatory poem by the flemish jesuit Andries Schottus. ¶ Spoelder Amsterdam 1 for the binding
