(title-page soiled, some repairs on title-page (causing text loss on verso side in the Privilège.) and last pages repaired (with some loss in colophon and index); numerous old owner's entries on the title; first 80 pp.waterstained; a few waterstains in the margins; upper hinges weak) ¶ Provenance: numerous old owner's entries on the title; bookplate of D.S.Robertson. ¶ Denis Lambin (1520-1572) published the first edition of Horace in 1561. "... he had won a wide reputation by his great editions of Latin authors. The first of these was his Horace (1561). ... he had gathered illustrations of this author from every source; and he had collated ten MSS, mainly in Italy. The text was much improved, while the notes were enriched by the quotation of many parallel passages, and by the tasteful presentment of the spirit and feeling of the Roman poet." (Sandys II/189). Schweiger notes for this 1579 edition: "Ist bisher als die vollständigste u.beste Ausg.von Lambin angesehen. Sie enthält allerdings einige Zusätze von L. mehr, aber es sind auch Anmerkungen von Hr.Stephanus beigefügt." (Schweiger II/398)
