(thin pencil underlinings and pencil annotations in French, in a neat hand, throughout; 19th-cent.annotation on second blank, head of spine slightly damaged) ¶ The third of seven Giolito editions (first 1544). Adams P.813. "The new style can be seen at its best in such books as Giolito's Petrarch of 1544. Giolito of Venice was the most influential Italian printer in the middle years of the century and he set a new fashion with his initials, borders and illustrations. These employed cross-hatching much more freely than hitherto and were copied by nearly all his Italian contemporaries. His initials, of which he had several sets cut, each contained a complete scene rather like the historiated initials of medieval manuscripts, and they seem to have been immensely popular." D.Bland, History of Book Illustration', p.139-140.
