Author: MODESTUS, Publius Franc. Title: Venetias.
Description: (Rimini, Bernardino Vitali, 1521) Folio. (27, 9x18, 0cm). [xii, 216, 20] ff. Modern half morocco. (title-page repaired; some (water-)stains; the woodcut depicting the Lion of St. Mark is missing (page repaired), a few pages damaged (a few letters text loss, due to moulding?); with old (pencil) annotations (both on plants and the on Venetias itself); lacking the last ten leaves of part II) ¶ With the second part, which was not always incorporated (see Brunet): P.F. Modesti Ad Claudiam Francorum reginam sylvarum liber unus; but LACKING Inter Vidum Rangonum et Ugonem Pepulum duellum. ¶ Curious copy: LATIN - ENGLISH HERBAL GLOSSARY in the margin of the first ca. 100 leaves: a 17th century hand has written latin names of 416 (!) plants and herbs, with the english translation underneath in a well legible hand. The damage to the pages is probably due to storing plant leaves and/or herbs between the pages. ¶ Some 16th-century annotations and scores in the first 20 leaves. ¶ Most renowned and most poetic work of Modestus. Modelled after the Aeneid, the history of Venice - from its mythical foundation to the War of the Holy League - is told in twelve books in Latin hexameters (Pattini, Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, Vol.75). ¶ First book ever printed in Rimini. "It is said to contain anecdotes which displeased some noble Venetian family and the work was therefore suppressed." Renouard finds this supposed ban doubtful.
