Description: Parma, Ex Regio Parmensi Typographio (Reale Tipografia Parmense) (= Bodoni), 1797. L-4to. (30, 5x22cm). 3 parts in one volume, each with title-page (medaillon vignette on each title-page). [ii], 16 & 110 & [ii], 279 & 104 pp. Later half vellum. (board edges chafed). A fresh untrimmed copy on strong white paper. ¶ Brooks 689 & 690. "A splendid and correct edition, founded on Le Clerc's, with some of Grævius' and that editor's notes... The latin metrical version is more elegant than faithful. In his preface to the "Theogonia", Zamagna imagined Hesiod to have been more ancient than Homer, and equally without foundation supposes him to have used the Ionic dialect... This work was reprinted, with an Italian version by Pagninus, in 1798 (= 1797), 4to, at Parma; usually bound in three parts." (Dibdin II/38). "Sehr schöne Ausgabe." (Hoffmann II/257 for the Italian translation). ¶ Bernardo Zamagna (1735-1820), jesuit from Ragusa, translated besides Hesiod also Homerus in latin, and wrote commentaries on Theocritus, Catullus, Hesiodus, Tibullus and Propertius. After having refused the chair of Greek in Milan he returned to Dalmatia. Giuseppe Magnani (1737-1814), translated i.a. Anacreon, Callimachus and wrote for him Epigrams, Orations and Bucolic poems, all published by Bodoni.
