Lacking the frontispiece but otherwise complete. (title-piece sl.chafed; paper sl.tired and browned/foxed, a few ink stains on a few pages) * ¶ With a few owner's marks on the flyleaves, and old bookplate and owner's entry of Rev. Thomas Drummond, d.1738. ¶ Marc-Antoine de Muret (1526-1585), "le meilleur orateur du temps." (Montaigne). After having to flee France on charges of heresy and sodomy he held a professorship of humanity in Venice from 1555 to 1558. His friendship with Paulus Manutius led to his publishing at the Aldine Press. Professor in Rome from 1563 to 1584. (Sandys II/148-152). "L'éloge du massacre du 24 août 1572 est une tache ineffaçable dans la mémoire de Muret." (NBG.36/1000-1). ¶ Johann Thomasius (or: Johannes Thomä, Johannes Thomas; (1624-1679) was a german professor of law, diplomat and literary author. This collection first published in 1672.
