Description: Lyon, Seb. Gryphius, 1542. 8vo. (15, 9x10cm). 447, [1 printer's device] pp. Later vellum, with morocco title-piece. (tiny hole in title-page; first pages very lightly waterstained, otherwise good). Early edition. ¶ Provenance: armorial bookplate of "Wm. Wynne Esqr. of The Inner Temple" (with a handwritten note of his acquisition: "Wm. Wynne Rome March 2o. 1731"); and an owner's entry of Roger Hinks (9 March 1932) written on the flyleaves. Old owner's entry: "Ioannis Bacilerii liber" written in the colophon. ¶ Perotti (1430-1480) "devint professeur à l'université de Bologne, où il avait fait ses études. Sa traduction des cinq premiers livres de Polybe, les seuls que l'on connùt alors, le recommanda à la protection du pape Nicolas V. ... Les ouvrages de Perotti sont compté parmi les plus anciens monuments de l'imprimerie." (NBG39.623.). "The free and flowing, though far from faithful rendering of Polybius, executed by Perotti, was highly appreciated by Nicolas V." (Sandys II/71). Baudrier VIII.170. ¶ This edition not in Adams, Hoffmann III/272. ¶ The former owner Joannes Bacilerius might be the composer Giovanni Bacilieri (ca.1580-ca.1619).
