(marginal worming in last 24 leaves; small ink-stain on two leaves; binding a bit worn, spine soiled; bookdealer's related catalogue cutting on upper paste-down; with some old, slightly trimmed, annotations) ¶ The first volume of Turnebus' Adversaria only. The second volume was published in 1565, and Addenda in 1573. Turnebus was Royal Reader in Greek in the Collège de France (from 1547 until his death in 1565), and for some years director of the Presse Royale. "Late in life he completed his most important work, the thirty books of his Adversaria, in which a large number of passages in ancient authors are judiciously explained or boldly emended. De Thou descibes them as 'aeternitate digna'. (Sandys II/186). ¶ "The enormously rich collection of his Adversaria (1564/5) gives evidence of his very wide interests."
