(spine soiled but neatly restaured; later marbled cover paper; a few annotations in aniline pencil; a very good copy with ample margins on 'papier de vélin') ¶ With four title-pages, two in latin and two in armenian, the latter with title engraving of the Insula S.Lazari, home of the convent of the Mechitarist Order. ¶ Brunet I/ 1109: "Quoique datée de 1818, cette édition n'a paru qu'en juin 1819, dix mois après la précédente (l'édition en latin de Mai et Johrab). (..) Il y a quelques exempl.in-fol. en pap.vélin." - This is the parallel armenian-latin-greek edition (A few months earlier Mai and Zohrab had published in Milan a latin rendering based on a polished italian translation). The greek original of the Chronicon was mostly lost, making the discovery of an almost integral armenian translation an even more important event. The manuscript of this armenian translation of the Cronicon was discovered in 1782 by George Dpir Ter Yovhannisean, known as Palatec'i in east Armenia, found its way to the the monastic library at Etschmiadzin, and was transferred in the 20th century to the Matenadaran, the Institute for Ancient Manuscripts in Yerevan. It is catalogued as "Cod.Maten.1904". Mkrtic Awgerean, also known as Johannes Baptista Aucher, Mechitarist monk in Venice, requested a copy in 1790, and another one in 1793 to check the first one. FIRST EDITION OF THE ARMENIAN TEXT. Very rare edition in the even rarer folio issue.
