Title: De Frisiorum antiquitate et origine libri tres. In quibus non modo eius gentis propriae, sed & communes Germaniae totius antiquitates multae, hactenus incognitae, produntur. With woodcut printer's mark.
Description: Colonia Agrippina, in officina Birckmanniana, sumptibus A. Mylii, 1590. [xxxii], 335 pp. Goldstamped limp vellum, covers with border with in the corners french lilies and a central floral ornament, flat spine devided in 4 compartments, in each a cipher, forming the year 1590. (Lacks ties) ¶ Dedication copy, with handwritten dedication on title-page: "Magnificentissimo, Nobilissimoque capitaneo Regiae M[ili]tis. Georgio Jaricho. D[omi]no ac patrono suo Author. D.D." The adressed person is the catholic Georg Jarich van Liauckama (ca. 1557-1642), a Frisian nobleman who was captian in the Spanish army. The printed dedication is to the States of Friesland. With laudatory poems of: Pedro Ximenez, Jean Matal, Karel Utenhove, Simon Toelmann, Jean Polit. Suffridus Petri (1527-1597) is concerned as one of the most important scolars of his time. He intended to write a general history of Frisia, but this never appeared. In 1596 he fell out with Ubbo Emmius, who said Suffridus work was nonsense. (VD16 P 1779; HaitsmaMulier- Van der Lem, 383, a.)
