(libr.stamp on free endpapers; missing: the last numbers - 158 to 165 - of December 1873) A very good set. Almost complete run of this mouthpiece of international militant catholicism (sometimes called the 'Black International'. Founded after the fall of the Papal State in 1870 this journal was published in a German and French edition and sent to ca. 300 catholic periodicals around the world. Although the Correspondance was not officially linked to the Vatican, the editors considered themselves rightly the trustworthy advocates of a pope in dire straits. A network of well-informed correspondents supplied reliable information on developments around Europe, and the Correspondance had a rather strong, ultramontane and anti-liberal, influence on the catholic press.
