[4], 310, [2, blank] pp. Twenty- five hand-colored engraved plates (including frontispiece) depicting anthropomorphized vegetables in a variety of situations. Some scattered foxing throughout, mainly affecting the text. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in a similar floral design and lettered in gilt, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. A very good copy of this highly amusing book in a very nice full morocco binding. The illustrations, reminiscent of Grandville's Les Fleurs animées (Paris: 1847), are by Amédée Varin (1818-1883), French draughtsman and painter, member of l'École française, who belonged to a dynasty of French artists. Varin took part in the preparation of the engravings for Les Fleurs animées (see Beaux livres illustrés français at http://www.citedulivre-aix.com/granvillelelee/presentation.htm). Varin's illustrations for L'Empire des légumes were used in Romeo Salta's cookbook Le Delizie della mia Cucina (Rome: 1964), the Italian edition of The Pleasures of Italian Cooking (New York: 1962). Other works by Amédée Varin include: Les papillons, métamorphoses terrestres des peuples de l'air par Amédée Varin, texte par Eug. Nus et Antony Méray (Paris: 1852), and, together with Eugène Napoléon Varin (1831-1911), L'Art industriel, recueil de dispositions et de décorations intérieures, comprenant des modèles pour toutes les industries d'ameublement et de luxe (Paris: 1839-1848), Le Trésor du fidèle (Paris: 1845), and L'Architecture pittoresque en Suisse [The Picturesque Architecture of Switzerland]; ou, Choix de constructions rustiques prises dans toutes les parties de la Suisse dessinées et gravées par A. et E. Varin (Paris: 1861). Carteret III, p. 218; Vicaire VI, col. 243-246. .
