"Ruskin's mood revived the idea of their collaboration on a book.. Dame Wiggins of Lee and her Seven Cats was an early nineteenth century children's story which Ruskin believed had the right mixture of lightness and reassuring elements to merit reprinting. He had the woodcut illustrations of the 1823 edition republished, in line only, so that readers could colour them, and added four original verses to explain how the cats were educated. Kate provided four crude pencil sketches for the new verses. Her work was slight, and certainly out of keeping with the original heavy-lined woodcuts; nevertheless, Ruskin, in his euphoric mood, decided that the drawings were 'exactly right, and don't want a touch more.' He refused to alter or sharpen her lines, and, moreover, declared that if she could draw cats like these, she could forget his previous attacks on her rat-like dogs and cats" (Engen, p. 128). This special large-paper (quarto) edition was issued on Whatman paper in an edition of just 400 copies. Schuster & Engen 64.1e. .
