Volume 1 only is a second edition; volume 2 is a first. Frontispiece portrait of Ursin at age 53 engraved by Clemens Ammon (perhaps after Georg Christoph Eimart), with the year of his death handwritten in the margin below. Two octavo volumes bound as one: frontisp. port. )5(, A-2E8, 2F2; )(8, ?8, A-Z8, a8. Pagination: frontisp. port. [10], 439, [13]; [32], 381, [3 blank]. A few leaves are signed incorrectly and there are Some errors in pagination. Contemporary vellum, sound but quite soiled, with traces of hand titling on spine, all edges red. Internally clean. Two 19th century ink presentations on verso of title-page, dated 1850 and 1863. Ink ownership of John D. Davis (1854-1926, American), who studied at the University of Bonn, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Leipzig. He served as Professor of Hebrew and cognate languages, Semitic philology, and Old Testament at Princeton. Davis was an adherent of the Princeton Theology and represented a conservative response to the higher criticism of the Old Testament. He also served as editor of A DICTIONARY OF THE BIBLE (Phila. 1898). A few early ink notes on front endpapers, an old shelf number in lower right corner of the t.p. as well as some early ink notes, light ink bracketing of text or pencil ticks intermittently in margins of volume one. An early work of Protestant theology regarding bible criticism and interpretation, in very good condition. .
