Text is very clean despite a very few, scattered, small ink spots. An attractive copy in very good condition. Richard Smith Coxe ((1792-1865) was born in Burlington, NJ, graduated the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1805, and studied law, first with Judge William Griffith of Burlington and then with Horace Binney of Philadelphia, before being admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1812. In 1822 he established a practice in Washington DC, where he proved himself a distinguished member of the District bar, arguing frequently and successfully before the Supreme Court. He compiled this massive dictionary largely before he turned eighteen; and it is, unsurprisingly, a derivative work based upod the work of Samuel Johnson and others. Included in the body of the work are the "Preface to Mr. (John) Walker's dictionary" and Walker's "Principles of English Pronunciation." Fellcone notes two slightly varying printer's imprints on the final text page, though without any textual differences. In this copy the line reads "Lexington Press." (Felcone, NEW JERSEY BOOKS 1801-1860, 531; D.A.B. II, pp. 487-488; Shaw & Shoemaker 28239). .
