When he died in in 1965, at the age of 79, after a long and prolific career, Tanizaki was among the most respected of the elder Japanese writers. He had achieved success and recognition much earlier: an edition of his complete works was issued in 1930; and he was awarded Japan's Imperial Prize for Literature in 1949. Among his many fine novels and collections of stories are The Makioka Sisters, Some Prefer Nettles, and Seven Japanese Tales. .
