Title: Electrical Boy; or, the Career of Greatman and Greatthings
Description: 1891. TROWBRIDGE, John. THE ELECTRICAL BOY; OR, THE CAREER OF GREATMAN AND GREATTHINGS. With Illustrations. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1891. First edition. Four plates, signed L. Bridgman, and wood-engraved text illustrations. iv,[11]-390 pp. 12mo. red cloth, gilt-stamped title and vignette at spine, upper board decorated and lettered in brown ink, patterned endpapers. Contemporary ink ownership on reverse of frontispiece, which is edgeworn and chipped along the fore-edge. Cloth shows moderate all-over soiling and some staining, and is rubbed at perimeters. Bookblock is thumbed at fore-edge, and a few leaves are dog-eared. Good plus. Trowbridge (1843-1923) was professor of physics at Harvard for forty years; during that time, he strongly advocated laboratory practice as an integral part of scientific education. He designed the Jefferson Physics Laboratory at Harvard in 1884 and served as its director from 1888 until his retirement. Along with his many scholarly publications, he wrote popular titles, like The Electrical Boy, for a general audience. (DSB; DAB). .
