REDDING, M. Wolcott - Antiquities of the Orient Unveiled

Title: Antiquities of the Orient Unveiled
Description: 1873. REDDING, M. Wolcott. ANTIQUITIES OF THE ORIENT UNVEILED. Containing a concise description of the ruins of King Solomon's cities, together with those of forty of the most ancient and renowned cities of the east, including Babylon, Nineveh, Damascus, and Shushan. New York: Redding & Co. 1873. Later printing. Illustrated, including a few folding plates and a folding map. (For more information abot the illustrations, see below.) 421 pp. + [3] pp. adv. Octavo. Publisher's binding; green cloth, gilt title at spine, upper board ruled in black with a central gilt cartouche, brown coated endpapers, all edges stained red. The map has a 3" closed tear at the point where it attaches to the volume. A mostly clean copy with occasional light foxing; though in a few instances it is heavy heavy. The binding shows minor edgewear and a bit of scuffing, but is solid and clean overall. A nice copy. This volume has numerous illustrations, including 2 color lithographs, 65 wood-engraved plates, and a color, folding map of "Jerusalem and Its Ruins." This is at variance with the title-page, which lists "three beautiful lithographs, and seventy full-page engravings," and the plate-list, which lists only one lithograph, the map, and 69 plates. However, there are several plates in the volume that have two images printed on them, with each image having an individual listing on the plate-list, and one listing which appears as a text illustration. The confusion is compounded by the fact that the plate list does not refer to page numbers and the plates themselves are unnumbered, though they are counted in the pagination beyond page 34, and have been inserted in an order which does not correspond to the order of the plate-list. In closing, this volume has all but three of the plates named on the list and eight which are not mentioned. .
