SCHLEIN, MIRIAM; ILLUSTRATED BY LEONARD WEISGARD. - Something For Now, Something For Later.

Title: Something For Now, Something For Later.
Description: New York: Harper & Brothers 1956. Hardbound 8.25 inches tall by 6.5 inches wide 44 pages. Description: Panoramic dust jacket art and interior illustrations (all in black and white) by the Caldecott winning artist Leonard Weisgard, who is fondly remembered for his pictures in The Quiet Noisy Book, The Golden Egg Book, The Golden Bunny and others by Margaret Wise Brown as well as some of the books in the Junior Deluxe Editions series, and ever so many more. Miriam Schlein was noted for her 'teaching' books about dinosaurs, other animals, history, etc. This is more of a story book, but does have a valuable lesson about friendship, tolerance, and cooperation. Two farmers come to a valley with rich but rocky soil. In two plots of bordering land, each farmer starts clearing the rocks and they end up with a rock wall between their plots of land. They both work hard clearing the land and preparing the soil. Then Homer plants corn on his side of the wall, and Perry plants cherry trees on his side of the wall. One day Homer spies a footprint and accuses Perry of coming into his cornfield. Perry explains he was chasing away the crows that were after the corn. A few days later, Homer notices Perry's cherry trees are struggling to stay upright in the wind. He suggests staking them, but Perry explains he has no string. Homer has string. We follow the two farmers with their different crops and different ways of thinking to the satisfactory ending.
