Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & cream plates, endpaper maps, faint foxing top edge, minor edgewear jacket (corner tips little rubbed, faint foxing reverse side). 152 pp. R. E. B. Duff commemorates the 100 year ago opening of the Suez Canal. The author describes the early attempts to forge a link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. He then describes the Frenchman de Lesseps himself, and the political obstructions, financial problems and engineering hazards successfully overcome by this remarkable Frenchman. Although the canal was meant to be neutral territory that any nation could use in commerce or war, it suffered many setbacks, particularly the Suez Crisis of 1956.
