Title: When the Corvette Uruguay Was Dismasted: The Return of the Uruguay from the Antarctic in 1903.
Description: Santa Monica, CA Adelie Books, 2004. Hardback quarto, no jacket as issued, very good plus condition, colour frontispiece painting, quarter-bound (cloth binding along spine, spine label, marbled boards, handmade acid-free paper), small mark spine. 24 pp. An English-language translation of a rare pamphlet by Ricardo Hermelo and colleagues, published in Buenos Aires 1946. Plus preface, appendices (original text) and bibliography. Synopsis: Most Antarctic buffs are familiar with the Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-4 which was lead by Otto Nordenskjold. However, because all of the primary sources are in Spanish and Swedish few are familiar with the interesting homeward bound journey aboard the Argentinean relief vessel Uruguay. The ship was severely damaged in a storm north of the South Shetland Islands. What transpired between the Argentinean and Swedish staff was controversial - and pride for Argentineans. (Translated from the Spanish by Gricelda and Lawrence Perales. Frontispiece painting of the corvette Uruguay in the Antarctic. Limited edition, 250 copies.) ISBN: 0970538618
