Title: Autograph letter from Th. Klodt to Franciscus Raphelingius Jr. [1568 - 1643], Grandson of of Plantin. On various subjects but mostly on religion [Sociansim].
Description: Bremen, autograph, 1609. [September 5]. Folio. [Meas. appr. 21 x 32 cm.]. Single sheet. Folded once horizontally. 73 lines of text, 2 lines signature Klodt. (2 pp.). (Extremities some wear, bottom blank margin a few chips and tears.). (Paper not watermarked.). On the sender Theodorus Klodt:.....Voet, Golden Compasses, vol. I, pp. 172 - 178: Raphelingius Jr. was the grandson of Plantin and carried on his father's printing business at Leyden until 1619. He published a.o. Dodonaeus' Herbal in 1618. Also mentioned in the letter is B. Vulcanus [Van der Aa, V. pp. 145 - 146], a scolar of Greek at Leyden. Raphelingen sent Klodt the auction catalogue of the Library of Marnix van St. Aldegonde, which was auctioned in 1599. Letters like these, from an international Calvinist scholarly circle, are quite rare in the trade. A transcript of the letter is present. Franciscus van Raphelingen was a student of Justus Lipsius.
